Hello Mr. Green,
I have a question for you please. I have a 1975 Sho-Bud Pro I with the original pick-up and I'm playing through a 1972 Fender Twin Reverb with the original D120F JBL speakers. What amp settings would you recommend and should the bright switch on the amp be in the on or off position? In your opinion, would this steel and amp combination produce a sound that you personally would be pleased with? Thank you very much and have great day.

Mitch

I don't believe Lloyd is a member here. His responses usually came through Ricky Davis, but Lloyd does read the forum. Maybe he'll see it and respond through Ricky.

Hey Mitch; I haven't heard from Lloyd, but he will email me what he wants to share to help. But I can tell you a few things(he'll probably ask me..ha); as me and him play through the same blackface twin and JBL D130F and I play through JBL K130.
All Twins are going to respond differently because of their set up>preamp tubes/caps/ and Speaker size and so the numbers on one amp may not be as good as another amp.
Here's lloyd's and here's mine.

Yes we have matching Green Cabinets that Rick Johnson built for us as Lloyd has of course LDG #1 and I have LDG #2.
A question for Mr. Lloyd Green : The Steel Guitar Forum (19)
We both play through 15" speaker so that's a diff. Second channel; Brite switch off; Volume 3; Treble 5-ish; Mid 1; Bass 3 to 4; Reverb(4 ish..all depends on how sensitive set up is).
Again; depends on how new/old the Caps are in your amp and; preamp tubes brand and two 12" speaker being JBL D's made for Fender Twin are good ;so that will get you close. When me and Lloyd play/record through this rig; there is NO effects plugged in; Just reverb on the amp.

Hey Ricky!
I know nothing about the caps in the amp or very little else for that matter. haha! I am NOT a tech guy! The man I got if from bought it new in 1972 and he once told me that he took it to an amp shop and had it "went through". It seems to be in perfect working order. Thank you for all of your help. If Mr. Green responds, please pass it on. Thank you.

Mitch

Hey Mitch; I'm sure your amp is fine..I'm just saying there are differences between EVERY Twin and I was giving> WHY?
Also Lloyd has a original made by Bill Lawrence a long time ago a 710 pickup. That pickup will also give a small response diff; but not far from Original; but as much recording that Lloyd Does; the 710 is the closet thing to a single coil; but it's a Humbucker, so no more hum in Studio. I've also switched to a 710 few years ago; as after Bill passed the Bill Lawrence pickups from existing company didn't sound the same as when Bill made them; BUT NOW; Bill's Widowed Wife Becky and daughter Sharon are making them and others with Bill's original winding machine and tooling and wire..yeeehaaa... and they sound out of this world AWESOME and only found here>

This is just all info to help you along and all this is what is under Lloyd Green's hands.

Thank you Ricky for all of the great info! I have very little experience with a Fender Twin but I've used a Bill Lawrence 710 quite a bit and have wished that I wouldn't have sold it. They are great for sure. What I use now is a Jerry Wallace Truetone in a D10 Zum. This old Sho-Bud that I'm playing is one that I repaired a few years ago and you were very helpful with your tips and advise. Thank you again for everything!

OH you're very welcome Mitch. Yes Jerry Wallace(RIP) was my longtime go-to friend as any single coil pickup I needed I got a
TrueTone of course and he would rewind Sho~bud pickups for me and then me and him came up with the PERFECT SHO~BUD replacement with a TrueTone narrow mount wound to 17,500 ohm and coil Tap at 12,500 ohm if needed; and he sold a TON OF THEM. I miss him so much.
That twin you have is a fine amp bro; Just basically you are looking to hear high end and low end Clarity as even as possible; so Pedals steels have natural Mid-range to it; so down/off on mids and just work your bass and treble to blend that clarity and you'll kick--butt with that bro. Go to it.

Mitch; Surprise!!!!.This just in from Lloyd Green for you.
Quote:
Hi Ricky –

Please tell Mitch Ellis for me, “Thank you”.

I’m not recording at the present. My Fender Twin Blackface was consigned to the graveyard a couple of years ago. Since then I have used Russ Pahl’s 1969 Drip Edge Fender Twin in my cabinet head.

I no longer have that and it’s in the possession of Eddy Dunlap at the moment. He loves it, using it with Vince Gill’s 4 nights of shows at the Ryman a couple of weeks ago.

But….I’m gonna buy another Fender amp, and if It’s a Twin I’ll get my Rick Johnson built, green cabinet head back from Eddie. Meantime I told him to simply use it and enjoy the sound. But I may buy a Deluxe or a Princeton. Right now I don’t have a Fender amp in the house for the first time since 1964.

“Mitch, to answer your question : Yes. That steel and amp combination would produce a sound that I personally would be pleased with. That is a great combination you have. If you want/need no hum pick-up, Lawrence 710.”

“My Fender Twin amp settings can be found many places here on the Steel Forum and elsewhere on the Internet.

But the settings Ricky Davis gave you are pretty close I think.”

Cheers,

Lloyd Green
